I need a good antivirus + antispyware (and a firewall) for my laptop?

I was looking into getting Vipre antivirus + antispyware and the Sunbelt firewall, but I’ve heard that Vipre doesn’t keep you from visiting infected sites like some other internet security software would. I also checked out Kaspersky, but I think that might suck up too much space on my notebook. Any ideas? I need a dependable internet security + firewall that won’t make my notebook run slowly.
Keep in mind, I don’t care if I have to pay for it. I just want the best. Thanks!

Chosen Answer:

Stopping spyware (‘malware’) is more than a one-time inoculation, folks.
This is about a weekly habit of cleaning ‘nasty dust bunnies’
from your personal computer.
In much the same way you clean your home with your favorite broom
and your favorite cleaning solvents, you will also need good tools
to clean spyware out of your PC.

    Do this on-line scan first : http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
only if you might be worried that you could be infected now.

then go and get avast for full time protection,
you can not get a better anti virus system for free.
it has many features you will have to pay for in other systems.

don’t forget to register or you will only have it for 60 days
by registering you will get a license for a full year.
just re-register at the end of the year to get another one year license.

if you feel you would be even safer with a software firewall
    then
try this one it’s also free and it has no conflicts with avast
    http://www.pctools.com/firewall/
    or this one

and if you don’t like the look of avast then try Avira
    http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html
the trouble with this one is the pop ups nagging you to buy a full system
    and the relentless false positives.

or another good free one is Microsoft Security Essentials
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

you have a few choices here
just pick what looks good to you
    they all work well remember
you must only have one anti virus system running
on your computer at any time.

Avira or avast are the best free ones, avira being the best of those two,
run free of malwarebytes and superantispyware once a week,, the windows firewall will suffice you for a home unit. On a notebook , you need to keep your programs to a min.

Edit : Avira is best of the paid , if you go that way. http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02

According to tests, this years winner is G-Data as antivirus. You can read reports here : http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/main-tests
